Oklahoma PTA to host Bullying Town Hall in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, OK (October 14, 2103) — Bully victims are up to to nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. The National Association of School Psychologists has called bullying “the most common form of violence in society.” In Oklahoma alone, during the 2010-2011 school year, more than 60,500 cases of bullying were reported, according to the State Department of Education.

October is National Bully Prevention Month and Oklahoma PTA, along with the Oklahoma City Anti-Bullying Collaboration, will host the first Bullying Town Hall from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on October 29 at the Southern Oaks Library, 6900 S Walker Ave, Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma PTA, as the state’s oldest and largest child advocacy association, has planned this event for the community (PTA membership is not required).

The purpose of this town hall meeting is to present the Anti-Bullying Collaboration to the Oklahoma City community, present a summary of the Safe School and Bullying Prevention Act and introduce Oklahoma City Public Schools administration who will describe district policy and procedure and TIPS bullying reporting.

Topics include bullying prevention and state legislation concerning bullying, local prevention programs, school-based initiatives, bullying prevention and intervention, working in the community to prevent bullying and how to support the kids involved.

The public is invited to this free event.

The Oklahoma City Anti-Bullying Collaboration is facilitated by Oklahoma PTA and includes partners from the State Department of Education, Oklahoma Legislature, Oklahoma Health Department, OU Health Sciences Center, B.O.O.S.T., Metro Library System, YWCA, Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, Family Builders, HeartLine Incorporated, United Way of Oklahoma City, Cimarron Alliance, Mental Health Association of Central Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma City County Health Department.
